I got myself some new crank baits, some more bags of my favortie GYs, some plastic swimbaits(baby perch, look cool) and some hooks as I continue to stock up during the off season.
I also got a cheap bait caster for $40 to learn on. I figure if I get frustrated and smash it, its only $40 wasted. Its 8:26pm cold, windy and rainy and Im tempted to go down to the lake to take a cast. I keep getting yelled at for casting in the living room with the dogs and xmas tree. |

Glad to hear you had a good day Rob.First warm day with no ice on the water next year we gotta hook up and break in that bait caster if you don't do it before the end of the year |

Thanks BN! It was definetly a good time.
Tboe, I absolutely will take you up on that offer. I just went down there to give it a shot. I didnt have to many bird nests but even with the drag as loose as it will allow it I cant seem to cast it to far. Could definetly use some pointers! |

Hey Rob Happy Belated B-Day. I too bought a cheaper brand of baitcaster reel when I first started for the same reason, figuring I can learn on it before spending lots on a good one. My experience is that the lower cost reels just don't have the quality bearings or the quantity of bearing s that make all the difference in the world. Everytime you change a lure you have to adjust for it (they all weight different) To start, holding your rod about 2:00 you push the thumb bar and the lure should slowly decend not fall at a fast rate down to the ground. If it does, you should be ready to cast. If not the adjustment on the right or left of the reel should be loosened or tightened which ever makes the lure descend at a slow but steady fall. There are other adjustements you can make, but try that first. Also with the lower cost reels, try using a heaverier weight lure, just to get the feel of cast, and always keep the thumb a hair off the spool when that cast is in motion.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the birthday wishes gentleman.
Thanks for the advise Den. You pretty much made it clear I was doing it wrong! The cheaper reel def doesnt help either.
The 18 inches of snow out there isn't going to let me give it a try now |
