2014 NJ Fisheries forum held at Batso Village
BigNasty06
Back on Sat. Feb 22, 2014

I attended this years fisheries forum to gain a better insight as to the past, current, and future state efforts in supporting our local bodies of waters and to get updates on the trout disease up at Peaquest Hatchery. Received some good information and a lot of questions were asked.

Chris Smith as usual did an outstanding job with his portion of the presentation. Instead of jotting down a lot of notes, I took various screen shots of his slides in the hopes of giving those a better picture of some of his results over the course of last year.

Upcoming Flea Market. FYI

Summary: The infected trout (brook & Brood strain) were highly impacted by the latest virus which affected the Pequest hatchery. A whole hour was spent discussing the impact, euthanization, treatment, and planned distribution into stocked bodies of water. The Rainbow trout were found to be a bit resistant to the internal and external disease of the infection. The size of bass caught at Alloway has slowly deteriorated since opening to the public. Sub 15" Bass have been caught. Not like the whopper 18"-20" seen in years past. The Stone Tavern Grass growth has been identified and a treatment planned maybe on the agenda for later in the year. Lake Audrey's PH level continues to decrease. Another Lime project maybe in the works but the verdict is still out there whether this effort would be beneficial. Not too mention the rumor of Smallies and large mouth bass being transported to other bodies of water. Work on the Sunset Lake Spillway is continuing. The area near the zoo\raceway is under construction. No hard completion date set. Chris has yet to issue any 2014 WMA permits. Hopefully will be done in first week of March.

Overall, the forum was good. More time and emphasis was put towards the Trout disease issue. Blackwood Lake is currently real low\empty. Was not the doing of the State. Someone in the township remove the blanks near the spillway allowing more water to empty than was needed. Situation is really unfortunate.

They represent the size of Largemouth\Smallmouth Bass in Millimeters.

So Assunpink is a 15" Lunker Lake with avg. indicated by Red Pointer.

A 12" bass would represent 325-349mm....and so on.

Good info Nasty. Alloway thing seems on point. I caught a good amount of fish over 15, but the dinks were dinks

Yes...Chris S. did elude to stocking DoD with Smallies. zipped Which sounded as though it began last year but has been pretty hush...hush... itsok

with the deep water depths and sandy\rocky bottoms in certain areas, it was a great idea. I'm quite sure more will come on that note but that spoken not to the mass but those who spoke directly with him
