Hey guys happy 2014, glad to see the site back up and running.
Thinking of buying a 598. It's a discontinued/legacy product per Humminbird. Your experiences/comments about the unit will be very helpful. Thanks
Anybody have one - how has it worked for you - any issues? Any performance issues when the transducer is attached to a bow mounted trolling motor?
Appreciate your comments.
Thanks,

I have the 798 which just has a few more features than the 598. The only notable difference is that the 798 can be linked to another humminbird side imaging unit.
It is a great buy for the price, but it comes down to what you are using it for. There is not a real advantage in shallow weedy lakes. The side and down imaging helps in places lake Pink and Squan. The gps is great for marking specific spots on any lake. To use the unit to its fullest requires a lot of reading and watching youtube videos.
The side imaging on split screen in the unit is hard to read cause of how small the screen is. When in full 4 split screen mode, you can not have water temp on screen at same time. To see water temp, you must be in single screen or have gps on screen also in dual split mode. Split gps screen is impossible to read unless your zoomed in all the way. Its fine to mount the transducer on the trolling motor, but I had interference at first. After days of research, countless wire runs and grounding, and useless noise cancellers, I found that the humminbird transducer mount itself which is made out of metal was causing interference. I added a rubber pad between the mount and the head of the trolling motor and that fixed it.
I have a 898 that is much easier to read. I run the 798 at the console for mainly gps mapping and slow side image cruising and the 898 up front on the trolling motor. The interlink comes into play here cause I can drive by a spot and waypoint it and it will show up on both units. I added Navionics to it for better detail. I want the 1199 or new Onyx unit, but for over $2000, Ill wait til I win a couple Flats T's.

Some good info. right there Jackson! Thanks for taking a stab at it.
Jim...hope this bit of info. helps out in your decision making. Like Jackson stated, depending on your specific bodies of waters you would like to fish, I guess it all depends on your needs in a fish finder or the places you intend on fishing.

I have a 998 and 898. Bigger screens are much better. But depending on your needs go whit what's best in your budget.

Jackson, BN and rvansciver,
Thanks for the response. Appears you guys like Humminbird. During this on going investigation I took the time to down the 598 (183 page) manual and Jackson I agree that the learning curve is steep. Also viewed on line videos to get an understanding of this leap (at least for me) in technology. Plan to pull the trigger this week unless I win the lotto then back to the drawing board but then an new boat would come with the bigger screen ff.
Thanks and see you on the water.

Do the humminbird mounts all fit the same devices or does each have a different mount fitting? Does the line from the battery plug into the mount and if so do they fit to all mounts?
The new boat had no electronics but the humminbird mounts are still there.
I was looking at the same model. Murph, did you see the price off bestbuy? I think it was like 450 bucks. |

Rob,
Thanks for the info, checked bestbuy it was $598. Best price I saw on line was 519 at an unknown site. Cabelas is 579.99 - 50 dollar instance rebate they mailed me. Not bad at $529.99
As for the mount I believe all their 5" screen models (500 - 600 - 700 series Sonar/FishFinder) use the same mount. The battery cable and the transducer cable plug into the mount.
Here's Humminbirds #: 1-800-633-1468 |

I just bought the 597ci for the deal above. Considering my last finder was the $80 Walmart special this should be quite an upgrade for me. |

Good luck with the new fishfinders. I got the 998 last august and finally got it installed this winter. Been watching the videos and trying to learn the many bells and whistles. Definitely the bigger the screen the better. |

I just sent mine back because it didn't have the down imaging. Buyer mistake on my part. So now I'm searching again. |

haha, that about $2k out of my budget. Plan is to get a smaller one for this year and then I will upgrade to something ridiculous like the onyx next year and move this year's to the steering wheel. Baby steps for now. |

Rob, definitely spend the extra $ to get side imaging. It makes a huge difference especially on shallower lakes.... |
