Alright Fresh off the Myrtle Beach and DC getaway and prepping for a Family Reunion down in Hot and Humid Florida, I pack one small finesse spinning rod, a baggy full of my go to lures (that sometime works back in Jersey) and proceed to jet set off to Florida.
For those that know how hard it is to get away from relatives to wet a line while on a Semi-vacation\Fishing outing, I was finally able to somewhat get out on my last day...early Sunday morning. This was my initial findings.
Lake Monroe looking Southward along Rt. 17\92:
Looking Eastward across this massive lake: Notice how calm the water is.
Looking Northward along the Rt. 17\92 shoreline: I-4 is the bridge in the background
Okay..the original plan on Friday was to land at Orlando Airport and head straight for the Lake Monroe Charter boat Fleet to be on the water by say 10am for about 3-4hours of fishing...but there was a change of plans in the help required to put on a festive Family reunion weekend. Oh well!!
Well on the final day, I was determine to wet a line especially since I couldn't go Carp hunting with the light tackle gear I had brought also to Myrtle Beach, SC. I wake up about 5am while the rest of my kin folks are still in bed and sleeping and jump in the rented Mustang GT and head back to the area I had mapped out beforehand.
Knowing that I only had about 3.5 hours b4 I had to get ready for Church services, I observed some local homies setting up shop to do some fishing...
I preceeded to go over and get a closer look...
and of course introduce myself....
These 3 gentlemen (William, Gene, and I believe Bo were using oatmeal balls, worms, and bobbers. They had a 3 hook setup (similiar to the High-Low rigs) used on wreck fishing. Basically, the worms were placed on the upper 2 hooks while the oatmeal was used on the below 3 hook. The oatmeal served as a Chum ball...thus attracting the various species towards the bigger prize the earthworms. I thought this was quite interesting being that my S**T that I had brought from Jersey was not WORKING!!! LOL!!
This angler offered to hook me up with some of there baits, but I just wanted to watch what they pulled out of these waters...especially when I saw some huge swells about 40' feet out from shore.
Note: These guys swore that they've pulled 8lb-10lb bass from these spots.
Some of those swells could have been from these: They're known as Algae eaters but they reminded me somewhat of the snakehead
Bottom Line: As the morning wore on, I did was fortunate to catch anything. I had a couple of tap...taps from what I believe were Bream fish and possible 1 or 2 bass but I definitey needed to have a better selection of hard and soft plastic baits. Although these guys had success on the live worms\oatmeal technique, the action definitely picked up around the time I had to leave to head back to the hotel. The local homies stated that entire shoreline area is normally packed with anglers. (elbow to elbow). I can only imagine having a nice glass boat and heading further away from the shoreline..what bass would be found. Although this trip was short, I would highly recommend heading back there as the potential to catch a Godzilla type bass can be visualized. I recieved much love not just by the guys along the shoreline, but those who had seen me carrying my Rod\Reel through the airport down in Florida. The typical question was, "Where are you going Fishing"? I would reply, I'm not.. I'm going golfing!!!! LOL!!!
Always a blast venturing to places never before visited,
